The consumption of ripe fruits with a strong sulfur odor, alcohol or coffee causes acetaldehyde to build up in the body. Without conversion to less toxic acetate by the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), balance problems and dizziness can occur.
Some people report that large consumption of alcohol with Durian from South Thailand may cause death.
Beware of local varieties of Durian in South Thailand, when consumed very ripe or in large quantities : they cause large amounts of acetaldehyde but also inhibit the aldehyde dehydrogenase that should convert it to acetate. More on balance problems here.
